The Coffee Detective Newsletter

Issue #23 November 2012

Greetings,

Well, it’s that time of year again.

Yes, we buy coffee all year, but there is a huge spike in the purchase of coffee makers between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I’m guessing that most of the time people buy a spanking new coffee maker or espresso machine for their significant other – so they can get to enjoy it for themselves as well!

This year, once again, thousands of people will be rushing out to buy a new single serve coffee maker. And there are a couple of “hot” new models to grab our attention. The Vue system from Keurig, and the Verismo from Starbucks.

Both systems make both coffee and espresso-based drinks like latte and cappuccino.

It seems that machines which make just coffee or just espresso drinks are becoming a thing of the past. Now everyone wants a single machine that does both.

If you are shopping for a single-serve brewer for that special someone in your life (You?), check out our updated Gourmet Coffee Gifts page.

Of course, not all of us are obsessed with these machines. So in a couple of weeks I’ll be publishing a new page featuring gift ideas for coffee lovers who like simpler and more elegant solutions to making great coffee. Stay tuned!

From the Q&A page - A new twist on making your own K-Cups

Here is an interesting comment posted recently…

People have tried various methods to make their own K-Cups for the Keurig brewers. Mostly this involves re-using K-Cups and replacing the original foil top with some aluminum foil from the kitchen drawer.

Taking this to a whole new level, one guy has imported a K-Cup injector assembly kit from China, just for his own use. Now, using K-Cup components purchased in bulk, and grinding his own coffee, he can make new K-Cups for just pennies a unit.

Genius or plum crazy? You decide.

For coffee marketing professionals.

As you know, I write the Coffee Detective site for coffee lovers. But I have now added one page for coffee professionals. It’s about a report I have written on what coffee drinkers actually say about coffee makers and gourmet coffee. If you are in the coffee business, particularly on the marketing side of things, you can learn more about my report here.

That’s it for this issue. I’ll write again in a couple of weeks.
