Can I drink coffee when I am pregnant?

by pearlin
(singapore)

QUESTION:

I'm 2 months pregnant. Can I drink coffee when I am pregnant?

ANSWER:

If you are concerned about drinking coffee while pregnant, talk with your doctor. I say that because I’m not a medical expert. I know about coffee, but not about medicine or pregnancy.

There have been studies that suggest drinking a moderate amount of coffee at any time during pregnancy is perfectly safe, and other studies that are concerned about a possible link between caffeine and miscarriage.

So I guess it is fair to say that nobody is absolutely certain about the answer to this question.

That said, given that women have been drinking coffee and tea while pregnant for hundreds of years now, common sense would suggest that it is reasonably safe.

If you are going to cut out drinking coffee, don’t forget about other beverages that include caffeine. There is little point in quitting coffee while you’re pregnant if you keep drinking tea, cola or other foods and beverages containing caffeine.
