Fogland Fogcutter from Coastal Roasters. A medium roast coffee with a rich and satisfying flavor.

First, thank you again Coastal Roasters! The first of your coffees we reviewed was your Fair Trade Sumatra Gayoland. This time we tried your Fogland Fogcutter.

Unlike the first coffee, which was a dark-roasted, single-origin coffee, this one is a blend of three different beans, and is medium-roasted.

As always, we ground a few beans, brewed enough coffee for a single cup, and then let it sit for a few minutes before tasting.

Why the wait? Because for us at least, it’s tough to appreciate the full flavor of a coffee when your tongue is screaming, “Hot! Hot! Hot!”

Being a medium-roast coffee, the Fogcutter has a milder taste than the dark roasts. There are no big-hitting bitter notes or sweet notes.

That isn’t to say this coffee is mild or, worse still, bland. It isn’t. It has a rich and bold taste profile. It’s just not as “strong” as a dark roast.

So what did we find in that taste profile? Our first impression was that this is a coffee that fills your mouth. You feel it not just on your tongue, but everywhere. We like that. It’s what Coastal Roasters refer to on their site as a “rich mouthful”.

Also, there was a bitterness there, most noticeable in the aftertaste. But the bitterness is balanced by a touch of sweetness.

We also found a little fruit in the taste, which works well to fill out the bitterness and sweetness, culminating in a bold, but layered flavor.

(We’re quite sure about the fruit because my girlfriend, who is the better coffee taster, gets a tingling behind her ears whenever she eats fruit. And this coffee gave her a little tingle!)

For us, this is an excellent morning coffee. It’s strong enough to wake us up, but not so strong that we feel we couldn’t have another cup.

It’s a great example of a good, bold coffee you can enjoy every day...and its taste will survive even if you add a little cream or sugar.
