Coffee and dehydration

by Joyce
(Bellflower, CA 90706)

QUESTION:

Does coffee dehydrate your body?

ANSWER:

No, drinking coffee won't cause dehydration.

Caffeine is a very mild diuretic, but the effect it has on your body is minimal. Even if the caffeine is causing a slight increase in urine production, the effect is offset by the fact that you are drinking water as part of your coffee. In fact, drinking coffee can be an important source of fluid intake during your day.

This whole question of coffee causing dehydration has been addressed in detail by the sports community, and the conclusion is always that reasonable coffee consumption won't cause dehydration.
