Honey Bean Coffee’s Velvet Hammer - a distinctive blend that is both mild and strong.
As always, the first order of business is to thank Honey Bean Coffee for sending us this coffee to review. To be honest, we didn’t know anything about them or their coffees before the coffee was delivered to our door. Now I’m especially grateful they sent us a pound of their Velvet Hammer coffee. It’s great. Most of the time companies seem to name their coffees after the country of origin of the coffee beans. Or they describe the coffee with some bland phrase like “breakfast blend”. Either way, the name doesn’t do much to describe the taste of the coffee. In the case of the Velvet Hammer, the name describes the coffee perfectly. It has a soft side – and it has bite. How did Honey Bean achieve this perfect blend of opposites? They blended a balance of Central American, African and Indonesion coffees, and then finished it off with an Italian roasting. The beans give you the mellow tones, the fruitiness and a lingering sweetness...and the Italian roast gives you the strength, and a touch of acidity that gently bites you on the roof of your mouth. I don’t know why more roasters don’t do something similar, because this blend of beans and the Italian roasting makes for a wonderful cup of coffee. This a great brew, at any time of the day. Definitely two thumbs up. You can learn more about Honey Bean Coffee’s Velvet Hammer coffee here...
