Organic Rainforest Reserve – a bold, tantalizing brew from Millstone Coffee

This is the first blend we have tried from Millstone coffee. And we’re glad we did.

Millstone’s Organic Rainforest Reserve is a medium-dark roasted coffee and is a blend of beans from...we don’t know where. It doesn’t say on the bag of whole beans we tried. Nor does it say anything further about the origin of the beans on the Millstone web site.

That said, we enjoyed the coffee very much, with and without cream.

And we appreciate the fact that the beans are 100% organic and Rainforest Alliance certified.

This Millstone coffee has a great aroma, and a bold, interesting taste

One of our tasters had two comments to make right from the first moment. One was, “I can really smell the aroma.” It’s discouraging to find that many coffees we try really don’t have much of an aroma when your pour them into the cup. But this one does.

The second comment was, “Now this tastes like a REAL cup of coffee.”

That may not be a very scientific description of the Organic Rainforest Reserve, but it carries some truth. The taste is quite bold, with a hint of that “medium-dark” roast flavor, and holds its taste well, with or without cream.

So far, we haven’t been able to find anywhere to buy this coffee online. However, the Millstone site has a product-finder tool, which will let you know whether any stores in your area carry it.

On the whole, we liked this coffee and will certainly enjoy the rest of the bag.

One last thought: While Millstone may not have the kind of brand quality associated with its name as Starbucks or Peet’s, we wanted to try some of their coffees, and are glad we did.

There is a certain snobbery when it comes to gourmet coffee. But the truth is, many coffees being offered by large roasters like Millstone get pretty close to the quality you get from the core group of gourmet roasting specialists.

The gourmet coffee business is changing...and you can now find some great coffees in unexpected places.
