One Dollar Coffee Maker

by Nick (The Coffee Detective)
(Montreal, Quebec)

Less than a dollar for all the parts.

Less than a dollar for all the parts.

Yes, I made a mug of coffee with this. My "coffee maker" comprises four stir sticks, one sheet of paper kitchen towel and four paper clips.

Did it make a good cup of coffee? Sure it did. I even got to stir the grinds and hot water a little with a fifth stir stick.

Am I serious about making coffee this way?

Not really. But I do think it's worth making the point that you don't need to spend more than ten dollars or so in order to make great coffee. A simple French press will do the job just fine.

When you spend more than ten or twenty dollars, you're not buying a way to make better coffee, you are simply buying a more convenient way.

Coffee is wonderful like that. Just a simple bean, roasted and ground. No additives or processing required. Crush the bean, add hot water, filter the grinds...and you're done.

BTW – feel free to construct your own one dollar coffee maker, take a photo and upload it here.

The more the merrier.

Not Quite, but yes.

Nevermind spending over $20, if your spending under $20 on an espresso machine then you're in for some pretty bad espresso! If it's non espresso coffee, then yes fair enough.

As for just crushing the been. All the grains have to be the same uniform size or else half the coffee will be over extracted and half under extracted!
