Rocketfuel Coffee Hawaiian Kona Dark – a sweet, mellow coffee with a dark, nutty base.

Rocketfuel Coffee offers a range of excellent coffees, one of which is Hawaiian Kona Dark.

Actually, we already wrote a review of their regular Kona coffee.

Here, in part, is what we wrote:

“Kona coffee is renowned for being sweet, with a simple taste profile, and just a touch pungent.

That’s what we tasted. This isn’t a coffee with a complex taste, but the sweetness is there along with that slightly pungent bite on the tongue.

What do we mean by pungent? It is the term used by coffee cuppers to designate a slight bitterness. Not to an unpleasant degree. Just a hint. In fact, it’s the slight bitterness that gives coffee its unique flavor.

Although the taste is mellowed somewhat by the addition of cream, the taste still comes through. And while the taste profile may be uncomplex and simple, this is very far from being ‘ordinary tasting’.”

The same goes for this new, dark-roasted coffee. It has all the sweetness and subtleties of the regular roast.

What is the difference between the two? We found the difference quite subtle, which is as it should be with a Kona coffee.

The dark roast seems to bring out a hint of hazelnut and fruit, with a touch of dark, rich earthiness.

One thing the dark roast doesn’t do is make the coffee taste stronger, or blunter. It still retains all it subtleties, and none of the complexities of the Kona taste are lost.

We’re guessing the roasters held back a few notches from a true French or Italian roast. Had they done that, some of the more delicate tones of a quality Kona would have been lost.

This is a terrific coffee we are happy to recommend.
