Single serve coffee brewers – as easy as instant coffee, and better tasting too.

As you may have read elsewhere on this site, we have mixed feelings about single serve coffee makers.

However, after a conversation with a good friend of ours recently, we are going to play fair and share one reason why a lot of people like the convenience of single serve brewers.

A good step up from instant coffee...

Here is what our friend said, more or less:

"I have been an instant coffee drinker my whole life. As far back as I remember. I don’t have the interest or time to grind coffee beans, mess with filters and wait for a whole carafe of coffee to brew. Besides, I’d probably only drink half of it anyway.

That’s why these single serve coffee brewers work for me. I have a Keurig and making a cup of Colombian or Kenya coffee is as easy as making a cup of instant.”

OK, we can’t argue with that.

Which single-serve coffee maker should you choose?

There are two main contenders in this market right now, Keurig and Senseo.

Keurig

Keurig offers one of the most popular range of single-serve brewers. You just fill the water reservoir, pop in the K-Cup, and press one button.

There are a variety of different models to choose from, with different features and price points.

Downside: Keurig brewers are a little pricey when compared to regular drip brewers.

Upside: Keurig offers a good variety of coffees in the K-Cup coffee format...over 70 at the time of writing. There are also some teas available in K-Cups.

Senseo

The Senseo single cup brewers use coffee pods. As with the Keurig, there are a few models to choose from, but they are all very similar.

And once again, you just fill the water reservoir, place a pod in the coffee pod holder, and press one button.

Downside: Still more expensive than a regular drip brewer, but less expensive than the Keurig brewers.

Upside: You’ll have more coffees to choose from, and some hot chocolate pods too.

Video Demo: The Keurig B30 Mini - perfect for dorm rooms or anywhere else where small is better.

The Keurig B30 Mini is a great choice for any circumstance where space is limited. Great for dorm rooms, kitchenettes, home offices, boats and RVs and so on. It makes coffee in the same way as the other Keurig models, one K-Cup at a time, but doesn't include a multi-cup water reservoir. As a result, the unit takes up a lot less space.
