Rocketfuel Coffee Sumatra 44 – a rich, bold and low-acid coffee from Sumatra.
As always, it’s a pleasure receiving coffees to review from Rocketfuel Coffee. Why? Because they never have very many coffees for sale. They don’t stock the coffees you’ll find in your local supermarket. They are not inexpensive. And they are always interesting. This Sumatra 44 is from plantations close to Takengon, a city on the shores of Lake Tawar in the Gayo area of Aceh in Sumatra. Before I drink a new coffee, I often pause and think about the region from which it came. Sometimes I call up a map on my computer, just to see where the coffee beans were grown, and how far they have some to get from the cherry on the tree to my cup. As with many coffees, this Sumatra coffee has been on a long and fascinating journey to get to me. It’s also worth noting that this is Fair Trade Certified, organic and shade grown. As for the taste, it’s wonderful. Following our usual routine, we ground some beans and immediately brewed a small cup and left it to cool for a few minutes. Then we got down to tasting it. (No cream or sugar!) Our very first impression was that it was an interesting taste, but quite mild. But after a few moments we realized that it wasn’t mildness we were tasting, it was the lack of that bite you get with more acidic coffees. This is a low-acid coffee, and when you get past the lack of bite, you feel it fill your mouth with a bold and full bodied flavor. Some people have described the taste as intense. But we wouldn’t go that far. It’s gentler than that. The taste is very even from start to finish, bold in a way that doesn’t simply grab you by the taste buds, mildly fruity, deliciously sweet and slightly earthy. As my girlfriend put it, “It’s like the beans were laid out on a forest floor to dry.” In short, we loved it. And if you like trying new coffees, we definitely recommend it. These beans are in short supply, but at the time of writing they are still available at RocketfuelCoffee.com.
