New seal for the Sunbeam C-30A vacuum coffee maker?

by Mary
(Harlan, Kansas, USA)

QUESTION:

We just purchased a C-30A at auction -- the rubber seal was so hard that it broke. Any ideas on how we can repair? Also, what is the best way to take care of the rubber seal if we get it replaced?

Thanks!

ANSWER:

We have never tried the Sunbeam C-30A, but by all accounts it's a wonderful machine and represented quite a breakthrough back in the forties.

There are quite a few of these still around, which is a testament to the quality of construction.

However, the two commonest problems are with the rubber seal and the power cord (which has rubber insulation). The old, vulcanized rubber grows brittle over time and cracks.

Our advice would be to take the brewer and old seal to an appliance repair store and see if they can cut you a new one. Modern seal materials don't have that same cracking problem.

BTW – The Sunbeam C-30A originally came with a tray set included. If you don't have one, keep your eyes open at flea markets and eBay – and you might get lucky.

Great question – and good luck with the brewer!

Dayseal
by: Anonymous

I ordered several from Dayseal a few years ago and received them all just fine and worked perfectly. It sounds like he suffered from health issues and had to abandon his work, maybe quite suddenly. He was certainly reputable previous to this recent turn. I wonder if someone could 3D print these seals? I recently bought a rubbery type part for my vintage Elna Supermatic sewing machine that was 3D printed.

I hope the dayseal guy's health is okay!

When I ordered my new seal a few years back it took quite a while for the gentleman to respond and send me the seal. When he did get in touch with me, he mentioned that he had health issues which were the cause of his delay. I hope he is okay.

Dayseal came through!!!
by: Eric

The Coffeemaster c30 silicone seal replacement works perfectly!’nIf you are still looking for one, checkout DAYSEAL.net. It may take 20 days to arrive but is well worth the wait. I also ordered the secondary seal which goes between the pot bottom and threaded metal disk. This holds the gasket to the pot and helps close the air gap. Happy brewing!!!

Oh and using the ‘New Cory Rod Filter’ is HIGHLY recommended

Dayseal came through!!!
by: Eric

Hello All,

FYI: I ordered the C30 gasket from Dayseal.net on
February 2nd and received it today February 24th. Incredibly fast for a custom made item!

I also recommend the secondary seal.

This is, in my opinion, a high quality piece of workmanship.

The metal ‘spring flange’ does not appear to be needed with the silicone material. The secondary seal is an O-ring that fits well between the underside of the upper pot and the metal ring which holds the large gasket firmly to the upper pot once the threaded funnel is screwed on.

Sunbeam Coffee Pot
by: Anonymous

The Sunbeam Coffee pots must have used a very good rubber seal, as for the most part they are all still in tact after 70 years. I find it hard to believe a better rubber could be found today that will last as long as the original one's do!

Dorwin Teague

My Sumbeam still has all the original parts, including the gasket and all still work great. An amazing coffee pot with an amazing design I think coffee pot was designed by Dorwin Teague who designed many radios and other appliances not to forget the buildings he designed for the New York 1939 World's Fair. The are many historical articles about his industrial designs.

Best coffee ever. Can't find replacement filter. The little wire that goes in the little hole on my filter kept coming out, the spring was flying off. I put one of those plastic things that come with screws and they hold the spring and the wire in place and keep the spring from flying off.

DAYSEAL Finally Comes Through
by: Sprint250

Concerning DAYSEAL Gaskets: I ordered a replacement seal for my NICRO 500 series coffee maker in February2021.The seal finally arrived in mid July. A bit of a wait(I'm very patient) but well worth it.
The gasket quality is good as is the fit.
60+ year old NICRO 500 is back in action again making XLNT coffee.

There was a guy on the net that had a video on you tube about how he made a gasket for the NIKRO 500 for himself but the upfront cost of doing so was in excess of $250. That's an expensive cup of Joe. He was going to offer them for sale to recoup his R&D expenses but I never heard/saw any follow up on that offer & the video has since been removed/taken down from YouTube.

So ,as far as I know ,Lee Day at DAYSEAL is still the go to place for the long out of production gaskets for the old vacuum syphon coffee makers. Just expect a long wait time for your order to arrive.

Problem getting the two pots back together
by: Anonymous

Purchased a C30A. Upon arrival the two pots would not separate. Put water in the pots and heated, they separated finally. However, they will NOT go back together! The seal on the top pot appears to be in good condition.

Fix for Sunbeam Gasket
by: Carl D

I thought to myself that perhaps the (very) hard gasket could be sanded down a little so it would fit. I had nothing to lose because I was planning on ordering a replacement at dayseal.net. Anyway, it can be done because I just did it. You can fix this problem for the cost of a sheet of sandpaper. I removed the gasket by unscrewing the inverted spout under the upper pot that acts as a retainer for the gasket. I dry sanded (though I now recommend wet sanding because the black dust it produces gets messy) it by grasping the gasket with the sandpaper and repeatedly twisting the gasket to slowly reduce the part of the gasket that comes in contact with the lower pot. It took a while of sanding, slowly removing material and incrementally reducing the diameter. I checked the fit on the lower pot frequently. I stopped when I could get the gasket to fit, but very snugly. You want to stop when it fits, but very tightly because it does still need to enable a vacuum to draw the coffee down. The taper of the gasket aids with this sealing so your sanding does not need to be super precise. Just sand it enough so it will go on. Got it? Very easy! Super cheap! Does require a little "elbow grease", okay? Posted 4/10/21

Gasket received!
by: Anonymous

I received my gasket from Lee @ Dayseal. It did take quite a while. I was getting nervous but he did send me an email indicating that he was working through some health issues. My gasket arrived today.

I am currently trying to figure out how to replace the old seal. I was able to separate the two units by filling with boiling water and letting it sit for a few minutes. They separated easily after that. I still don’t have a clue how to completely remove the old seal and get the new one on hough!

Dayseal gasket
by: Anonymous

I purchased the gasket from dayseal as others did below. About 15 days ago. I have emailed lee but he isnt responding back on shipping daye. How long did it take to get your gasket in? Since everyone stated he responds quickly I’m hoping he is ok in these pandemic times. If these are not mass produced Im sure it takes a bit to make it. Just wondering how long it took everyone here to receive it.

Solved my gasket problem
by: Doug H.

I received replacement gasket set for my C-30 Sunbeam CoffeeMaster from Dayseal, and I've discovered how to repurpose the old metal retainer cup into the new gasket. The old metal part is fused to the old gasket, so I had to cut the old gasket to release the metal part. Once done, it was easy to assemble the metal cup, new gasket set, and the funnel into one assembly that works perfectly. Dayseal sends a repair manual, but I had to figure this out on my own. Mr. Lee Daywas very responsive to my emails, and I recommend his products.

Am I missing something?
by: Doug H.

I received new rubber seals for my C-30 from Dayseal. Removing the old seal was accomplished by unscrewing the funnel piece from the upper pot. The old seal has an inner metal part which is threaded to engage the funnel piece and hold the whole seal assembly together, and attached to the upper pot.

The metal piece appears to be permanently fused to the large gasket, and I don't want to damage the inner part while trying to separate the two.

This part is not included with the Dayseal replacement set, and I was wondering whether anyone has tried to repurpose this part from their old seal and install it with the new one.

Or am I missing something?

You will find your parts. It will take some work on your part to replace it, you have to get the screw mechanism out of the old one...not an easy task but it is doable. Mr Day's gaskets are food safe and stay pliable.

No Seal to be had
by: James

I started with the Sunbeam C-50 about 40 years ago and worked my way back to the Sunbeam C-20 I use every morning.

To my knowledge there is no source for the rubber seal. There is also no way to soften an old one.

The C-20 uses a seal at the rim which if not damaged will work just fine even if it is hard.

The top pot is retained by a screw down rod that barely needs to be tightened and Use a screen from a modern filter in place of the cloth filter, which works perfect.

I believe the C-20 came out in 1939

Gasket rejuvination in 30A Sunbeam
by: Phil H.

Have a 30A in beautiful condition that I have had in storage in a box for over 15 years. Took it out but couldn't get it apart apparently because the seal had hardened. I came to this web-site and saw that a new seal was about 25.00 and decided I wasn't going to invest that amount in a coffee pot that possibly didn't work. In an effort to resucitate(sp) the seal I put vegetable oil around the hardened seal. After the first day I could turn it which I did and added a bit more vegetable oil. After the 3rd day I got the top to come off. Decided to run a few pots of water through it and see if the steam would help soften the seal a bit more. After 3 pots of water for a full cycle the top comes on and off fairly easy. Ran a pot of water with some vinegar through it and rinsed it thoroughly. Am now enjoying my first cup of coffee as I write this. Have a couple of issues left. The coffee in the lower pot is staying around 200 degrees so hopefully will lower to the proper temperature in time. If I can get that working I am going to go looking for some more cloth filters (I have six.) Hopefully this will help a few people with their gasket or seal problems. Phil H.

Replacements are available
by: Anonymous

Buy a new seal at http://dayseal.net/products for $27.50. Bought a Sunbeam Coffeemaster 20C without the seal for $19.00 at an Antique Market, the item is in perfect condition. But then had to dropped $27.50 on the seal. My wife laughed at me, but I always wanted to try one of this Vacpots. Nice to see someone sells these seals of the 30C too.

Solution.
by: Anonymous

Don't laugh, but I had a smaller c20 and replaced the seal with great success by using the rubber gasket that goes between a toilet tank and the base. Took a while for the plastic smell to disipate but it worked like a charm.
Hope that helps.

Sunbeam C20-A Gasket Melt (yum)
by: Greenie

Hi folks,

The gasket on my Sunbeam C20-A was rather cracked, but I gave it a go anyway. Well, it warmed up, the cracks 'healed', but it left a thin, difficult to remove, and fairly yukky residue on my coffee pot rim.

Is there any way to make this gasket stop sticking now that it has no cracks? If not, how do I remove it? I'm ordering a Dayseal replacement just in case.

I ran water through the machine twice, and twice I had a coating of residue from the old gasket.

Thanks for any advice.

Replacement Parts?
by: Anonymous

I came across this great Sunbeam coffee maker in the back of my pantry when I was cleaning it out. It was all there except for the cord and lid. I was able to find a cord that fits, but I'm now looking for replacement lid. Anyone out there know of a web site or other places that might have one? I've been checking eBay, but mostly I find complete units for sale.

Thanks for your help.

Aftermarket C-30A seal
by: James

A fellow in Florida, operating as dayseal.com, sells all sorts of rubber seals to the original specifications for coffee makers.

I purchased a replacement seal for my C-30A from him, mailing a money order for $25.

He turns the seals out of food-grade silicone, made to the exact measurements of the original seal (without the pesky stiffening metal strip in it). I have been using it since and it works wonderfully.

I also found (quite by accident) that for a replacement filter (since Sunbeam doesn't make them anymore) that the Yama YA-8 Coffee Syphon replacement filter fits adequately (they are available from several different companies on the Web).

Thank you!
by: Bruce B - Chicago

Thanks for the link to the Sunbeam C30 vacuum pot coffee maker seals.

After going through several Mr Coffee and other coffee makers, suffering through really bad coffee during the process, we got out the 75 year old Sunbeam C30B and have been using it for more than a year now.

Sunbeam, whose manufacturing plant was located just west of Oak Park on the south side of what is now the Eisenhower Expressway in Chicago, had the coffee brewing technology down to a science and never realized it. These pots make an incredible pot of coffee and the low heat setting keeps the coffee warm, without making it bitter, for hours after the original brew cycle is over.

You can have all of the cheap, plastic, and other contraptions they now refer to as coffee makers. I will keep our Sunbeam C30B working as long as possible because, as far as we are concerned, there is no other coffee maker!

New Seal for C-30A
by: samaiya

Hey I came up with a fix for broken or damaged seals for this coffee maker. You need a rubber ring from a latch front canning jar, you can buy the rings on ebay for about 2.50 for a box of 3 or so.

When you have the ring you can either apply it over the old seal or put it where the seal used to be. If you apply it over the old seal, run the coffeemaker with water a few times and it should completely adhere to the old seal by the 2nd or 3rd time.

I've got one on my coffemaker (applied over the old seal) now and it's been working quite well for a few weeks now.
