Can I use the same K-Cup twice?

Using one K-Cup to make two small cups of coffee.

Using one K-Cup to make two small cups of coffee.

QUESTION:

I was recently given a Keurig brewer as a gift. I really like it, but am not crazy about the cost of the K-Cups. The machine is great, but it’s costing me a lot more to buy coffee than I’m used to.

So here’s my question. Can I use the K-Cups more than one time? I had read elsewhere that it’s Ok to use them twice.

What do you think?

ANSWER:

Well, put simply, I think that anyone who is happy with a second cup of coffee from the same K-Cup has a very low threshold when it comes to enjoying their coffee!

K-Cups are designed to be used once and then thrown away.

Many will argue that there isn’t enough coffee in a K-Cup to make even one decent brew.

Anyway, take a look at the photo above.

I took a single K-Cup and used it to make two 6-ounce cups of coffee. That’s small cups, not mugs, which are more like 8 or 10 ounces each.

On the left you can see the first 6-ounce cup of coffee. Nice and dark. A decent brew.

On the right is the second 6-ounce cup of coffee I brewed, using the same K-Cup. As you can see, it is light and thin.

Yes, I tasted both. The one on the left – the first brew from the K-Cup – was just fine. The one on the right – the second brew from the same K-Cup – was thin and tasted like dishwater.

In other words, if you like a decent cup of coffee, never use the same K-Cup twice. In addition to getting a weak cup of coffee, it will fail for another reason too.

When you use the same coffee grinds more than once, the coffee becomes over-extracted. The good flavors have already been dissolved into the water the first time around.

The second time around, that over-extraction creates a nasty bitterness.

Weak coffee. And bad coffee.

As for the cost of K-Cups, I hear you. It’s a very expensive way to make your daily brew.

That’s why I always use a reusable filter, and fill it each time with my own coffee. This cuts back on the price and also reduces the environmental damage from throwing away hundreds of used K-Cups each year.

The reusable filter I use is the Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter.

I hope this answers your question!

Possible solution
by: Anonymous

STILL Not a great solution, but I cheat getting a 2nd cup of coffee out of my coffee pod, by putting in a good teaspoon full of instant coffee before brewing 2nd cup.

Coffee is NO Way going to taste Great or near as good as the 1st straight cup brewed, but tastes better using the instant, than not. Although, some may disagree, and also bad coffee is bad coffee. But the thrifty in me does this. I use reg. instant for med. roast pods and dark roast instant for Dark roast pods.

Thank You, you have helped to answer my K-Cup question.
by: Gonzales

I gladly applaud your response to this question. I enjoy a firm hot cup of coffee. The weak less flavorable tasting is not what I prefer. I too have recently purchased a reusable to help cut down the environmental waste and to save $$$! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!❤️

Weak not equal to Bad.

Weak coffee absolutely does not always equal bad coffee. Wrong answer.

My K-Cup Strategy
by: M. Hall

I’m not a coffee snob but I do like a good cup of bold coffee. I generally use a mug which will hold approximately 16 ounces. My technique is to brew the first time on the 10 oz setting and then immediately brew the second time on the 4 oz setting. The other thing that is important to do is set the brew strength to strong for each brew. I get a delicious 14 ounces of coffee out of each K Cup. Again, I’m no snob so my taste might not be on the gourmet level, but I do get a rich dark brew. I always make sure to purchase a high quality K Cup blend as well.

Re-use K cup
by: PatC

I put the used cup in the freezer and use it the next day. It seems to work well.

Love the 2nd used K-Cups
by: Anonymous

I love the weaker coffee and lots of it.
So at work they set them aside for me to use.
The whole idea is that I love a hot drink so I can drink more this way.

use k cup twice
by: Anonymous

It depends how strong a coffee you want to brew. I find that Americans seem to like watered down coffee. Europeans like strong coffee. The term strong is all relative!

twice brew k-cup
by: Anonymous

water should be on the grounds for 5 minutes. you don't get that with these instant brew makers. the press coffee maker is better.

Recycle
by: Kristy

I bring K Cups from my work and recycle coffe grounds around house or outdoor plants. I dump coffee into a recycled can, tear out lining, and recycle plastic. Even the Keurig designer thought they were bad for environment, and so a reusable pod/filter was created.

Reuse the same COFFEE and CUP
by: wayne

I LIKE weaker coffee and dont want to spend a small fortune on cups. I tried to reuse a BOLD cup 4 times and the coffee was GREAT the 3rd and 4th times (maybe acceptable the 2nd time). The problem is you can clog up the machine somehow. I am experimenting how to stop this. I think you need to rotate the cup to align the puncture holes with the pin but not sure yet.

K-cup twice. Stops up brewer.
by: Anonymous

When I have tried to use the same K-cup twice, I have run into the problem of the brewer becoming clogged with coffee grains. This will cause no coffee to brew or the cup to overfill.

Reusable k cups
by: Anonymous

You can buy reusable plastic k cups. Then buy coffee in large amounts and you put it into the reusable k cup. It's a great money saved and you get better, stronger coffee

Mix it up!
by: Anonymous

No. Literally mix it up. The coffee inside the k cup on the first brew is pushed to the sides of the k cup. Some people remove the cup (when its not too hot) and squeeze it put the coffee back in the waters path thru the k cup to make the 2nd brew stronger. I hold the cup with my fingers of the piercings (again, when it's not too hot) and shake it up. It'll make that second cup a bit darker (like the first cup in the picture above)

If you get into the habit of running 2 large settings through into one giant mug, it is great. One giant coffee :)

I reuse my k cup for a second cup of coffee and it taste just fine to me. I really don't like strong coffee so that's probably why it works for me :-)

As for the cost of them
by: Anonymous

I believe amazon is cheaper than stores. If you go to amazon and search there.. You can get like a 92 variety pack I believe for like 8 dollars. It may not be exactly as cheap as the other ones.. But it does help :)

Go big or go home
by: bboydastyck

If this is the case then it only makes sense ot make the biggest cup of coffee your keurig can make. Right? Take full advantage of whats in there.

But then the comment about a 6oz then taking it out and shaking it makes me wonder, will have to try that.
